No-deal situation with Wiley
Negotiations initiated over a year ago between swissuniversities and Wiley were interrupted in March 2025 (see swissuniversities communication). As a reminder, these negotiations aimed to maintain a Read and Publish agreement guaranteeing read access and open access publishing opportunities to Swiss researchers.
Switzerland is therefore in a no deal situation with Wiley for the year 2025.
How will things work out for the current year?
In line with the recommendations from swissuniversities, University of Lausanne and the BCUL, aiming at reducing commercial activities with this publisher, BiUM informs FBM/CHUV/Unisanté community of the following:
Publication fees
Researchers may continue to publish in Wiley journals BUT:
- Open access publication fees (APC) in hybrid journals will no longer be covered by centralized funding.
- Open access publication fees (APC) in gold journals will no longer be covered by UNIL Gold Open Access Fund.
- Publication under copyright (i.e. free for the author) with sharing of the author’s manuscript in Serval (green road) will facilitate access to your own publications for UNIL community.
Individual payment of APC is still possible but not recommended as it weakens the Swiss negotiating position.
However, researchers are encouraged to consider publishing their articles in journals covered by an agreement in place with their institution (see our financial support for open access section).

Editor and reviewer activities in Wiley journals
- swissuniversities recommends that universities inform their researchers that they can use their positions as editors of Wiley journals to promote Swiss research community’s advocacy as best as possible.
- swissuniversities recommends that universities inform their researchers that they should reconsider their activities as reviewers; evaluations for Wiley journals should not be given any priority.
Access to articles
Due to the lack of an agreement, articles published by Wiley since 1st January 2025 onwards will not be available (except for articles published in open access).
Your alternatives for accessing articles from this publisher are:
- The BiUM’s article ordering service
- Searching for articles on PubMedCentral
- According to CSAL and swissuniversities recommendations, by installing search “buttons” in web browsers (e.g. Unpaywall, LibKey Nomad)
- Request a copy directly from one of the article’s authors
- Search for available versions on Serval institutional archive
